The role of the NSW Office of Fair Trading within the Department of Commerce is to safeguard consumer rights and to advise business and traders on fair ethical practice.
Outsourced IT services
The NSW Office of Fair Trading chose Essential Software Australia, a wholly owned subsidiary of Trysoft Corporation Limited, to carry out their Building Services System (BSS) Renovation Project.
The Building Services System (BSS) is one of the NSW Office of Fair Trading (OFT) mission critical application systems. The system is used to manage building licenses (including owner builders), insurance, compliance/disputes and financial receipting. The system supports the collection of more than $20 million in revenue per annum.
After many years in operation the Unify DBMS running under the BSS was susceptible to fail, system response was slow at times and the current BSS Unix-based platform was out of date. Disaster Recovery Planning (DRP) for the system was also inadequate.
Essential Software Australia has been providing full-time, on-site service desk, maintenance, support and enhancement for the BSS for more than 10 years. For the renovation project we installed:
We also converted and upgraded 4 GL programs to Oracle compatible and ensured the safe migration of BSS data from Unify to Oracle.
The completion of the project has eliminated the risk of system failure and enables easier future development. Performance and response times are no longer an issue with improved reliability and a reduction in the need to call on help desk services. Database back up and recovery can now be handled by IT support staff.
The new hardware platform conforms to standard department approved practices and has resulted in benefits to other projects through improving the quality of data made available from the BSS.
